Several areas in and around Colombo sustained significant damage last night (29) as strong winds swept through the city, toppling trees and disrupting traffic movement.
Large trees fell along the Colombo–Galle Road, particularly between Kollupitiya and Wellawatte. Similar incidents were also reported in other areas, including Grandpass.
A major incident occurred on St. Joseph’s Road, Grandpass, where a massive tree collapsed, damaging at least six houses. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and all residents escaped unharmed.
The Meteorological Department warns that heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is expected in parts of Western, Sabaragamuwa, Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy, Galle, and Matara districts.
Strong winds between 50–60 kmph are forecast over the Western slopes of the central hills and in Northern, North-central, North-western, Hambantota, and Trincomalee districts. Winds of 30–40 kmph are expected elsewhere on the island.
