10,000 People in 14 Districts Affected by Adverse Weather Across Sri Lanka

According to the Disaster Management Center (DMC), a total of 10,270 individuals from 2,757 families have been affected by ongoing adverse weather conditions across the country.

Heavy rains and gusty winds have impacted residents in 140 Divisional Secretariat areas in 14 districts. As a result of continued rainfall, sluice gates of several reservoirs have also been opened.

The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has extended its Level-1 Landslide Early Warning for certain areas in the districts of Galle, Kegalle, Kandy, Ratnapura, and Nuwara Eliya. The warning remains in effect until 4 p.m. today (01).

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology noted that prevailing heavy rainfall in the southwestern region is expected to gradually reduce from today.

However, showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and North-western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts. Showers may also occur in parts of Uva, Ampara, and Batticaloa during the afternoon or night.

Fairly strong winds of 30–40 kmph are likely over the Western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central, North-western, Hambantota, and Trincomalee districts.

The public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize damage from localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
