All steps will be taken to end underworld – AKD

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated in Parliament today (20) that investigations have revealed the infiltration of underworld activities into certain individuals within official institutions responsible for public security.

He assured that all necessary measures will be taken to eradicate the underworld, acknowledging that the process will require time.

The President made these remarks while chairing the first meeting of the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Defence of the 10th Parliament, held today (20) in Parliament.

During discussions on court complex security, Minister of Justice and National Integration, Harshana Nanayakkara, Attorney at Law, mentioned that a proposal has been prepared to enhance security using modern technology, including the examination of all relevant parties, such as lawyers.

Additionally, Members of Parliament raised concerns about the release of lands in the Northern and Eastern provinces currently occupied by military camps. In response, the Secretary of the Ministry of Defense stated that a nationwide reassessment of lands occupied by the tri-forces will be conducted, and appropriate decisions will be made regarding their release.

Parliamentarians also inquired about military-run businesses, including tourist hotels, and their potential for redirection into more productive investments within the tourism sector. The President responded that a study will be conducted to determine how these businesses can be utilized for economic benefits.
