Unrest at Matara Prison Brought Under Control

The Sri Lanka Police states that the situation at the Matara Prison, where unrest broke out on the night of April 22, has now been brought under control.

The disturbance reportedly occurred when prison officials attempted to transfer an inmate to another correctional facility. In response, a group of inmates began protesting and engaged in unruly behavior, prompting officials to fire warning shots into the air.

Although the situation was initially stabilized, tensions flared again this morning due to a clash between two groups of inmates. Prison authorities used tear gas to manage the situation, and the Police Special Task Force (STF) was deployed to assist in restoring order.

The Prisons Department has confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that STF personnel have also been stationed outside the prison to ensure continued security.
